In short

  • Report all business income from a Canadian side hustle, even if it is below C$30,000, using Form T2125 with your personal tax return. The C$30,000 small-supplier test concerns GST/HST registration; it does not give you an income-reporting allowance.
  • Record your own packing fees and business expenses separately from merchandise owned by the shop and labels the shop pays for.
  • Ordinary service businesses use accrual accounting: earning the fee and withdrawing the balance can fall in different periods.
  • A platform summary helps you reconcile your records. It does not replace your own calculation of business profit.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Do small packing fees really count as business income?

If you arrange to pack orders for a shop with the intention of earning a profit, you are supplying a service. CRA’s business-income guide includes profit-seeking service activities. Calling the work a side hustle, doing it only after your main job, or receiving the money through a platform does not remove the reporting obligation. Start your records with the first business transaction, rather than waiting until a withdrawal makes the work feel substantial.

This article concerns an individual operating a service business, not someone receiving employment wages or running a corporation. Your actual working relationship determines the correct treatment. If the arrangement functions as employment, resolve that classification instead of choosing T2125 simply because the work happens at home. For independent parcel work, establish what service you supply, how your fee is agreed and which business costs you actually bear.

Which money belongs in your revenue ledger?

AirPost’s sender copy describes a shop sending products and packaging to your home while retaining ownership. You accept an order, print its label, pack the products and drop off the parcel. Your compensation is the fee you agree for that service. You are not buying the shop’s merchandise and reselling it to the recipient. A stock delivery therefore needs an inventory custody record, but its retail value is not automatically your business revenue.

Use the actual agreement and transaction documents. An amount you invoice or pay yourself needs its own classification.

The distinction has a visible price consequence. On 14 October 2026, AirPost’s Canada-to-Canada page displayed approximate Canada Post prices of C$13.70 for a small parcel, C$15.85 for a medium parcel and C$33.67 for a large parcel, including the label platform fee but excluding the agreed sender fee. One of each adds to C$63.22. If the shop pays those labels directly, that C$63.22 is neither your packing revenue nor a shipping expense you incurred. This is a price calculation, not a promised workload.

The CAD display is approximate and uses a daily currency conversion. Keep the actual transaction currency and the Canadian-dollar amount used in your books. Do not use a public price snapshot to convert an unrelated payout. If you bill a shop for additional services or advance a cost yourself, document that arrangement separately; the simple ownership table cannot decide every reimbursement or agency relationship.

Is the bank deposit the amount you put on T2125?

A bank deposit may already have a platform charge deducted. AirPost’s payout commission is 3%, using the shared constant checked on 14 October 2026. Your gross service earnings, that commission and the bank transfer are different ledger entries. Reconcile them from the invoice and balance movement instead of treating the deposit as the original fee. Any currency conversion or separately documented adjustment also belongs in that reconciliation.

Use a matching reference across the order, balance entry, withdrawal and bank statement. A withdrawal can settle several fees, while an earned fee can remain in the platform balance. If you record both the original fee and the later deposit as sales, you count the same income twice. If you record only withdrawals, you may omit fees earned during the year that remain unpaid at year-end. A list of deposits alone cannot explain either difference.

What if you earn a fee in December and withdraw in January?

CRA’s T4002 guide requires accrual accounting for ordinary self-employment income outside its specified cash-method categories. Under accrual accounting, income belongs in the period when earned, regardless of when received. Expenses belong in the period when incurred, subject to the relevant rules. A parcel-packing service does not become a commission-sales business merely because the platform charges a commission on withdrawal.

At year-end, review which services were completed and which fees were actually earned under your agreement. Keep unpaid earned amounts visible as receivables. Separately identify work that was cancelled, disputed or not completed; do not infer that every notification represents earned revenue. When the related balance reaches your bank in the following year, match it against the existing receivable. The payout date tells you when money moved, while the service documents support the income date.

How do you move those records into Form T2125?

  1. Identify the service business

Use a clear description of your parcel-packing activity and the business details requested by T2125.

  2. Total earned service revenue

Reconcile completed work, earned fees, unpaid receivables and documented corrections for the fiscal period.

  3. Classify costs you incurred

Separate current business costs, mixed personal costs, home workspace costs and purchases requiring capital treatment.

  4. Check the form’s adjustments

Account for GST/HST treatment and applicable adjustments before transferring the resulting net income to your return.

  5. Reconcile the closing balance

Explain why earned fees differ from withdrawals and retain the documents behind the totals.

CRA says a separate T2125 is required for each separate business or professional activity. That does not mean a separate form for every shop buying the same packing service. If you also operate a genuinely separate business, review the separate-business rule with your preparer. Keep the records distinguishable so that combined platform receipts do not conceal different activities, expense allocations or reporting requirements.

Tax software can ask for a business name, activity description and income categories in a different order from the paper form. Follow the official form’s definitions rather than inventing a category to fit the software screen. Have the annual gross service total and each expense category ready before entering them. If a tax slip arrives later, reconcile it to income already recorded so that the slip does not create duplicate revenue.

What should you save when a platform has an annual summary?

AirPost’s English copy describes a quarterly earnings overview for your tax return and monthly exports for the full picture. Download the records that support your actual period, then keep the invoices, bank statements and agreements alongside them. CRA generally requires business records for at least six years from the end of the last tax year to which they relate. Other circumstances can require longer retention, so do not delete a disputed or still-relevant record automatically.

A practical folder can separate income documents, platform costs, supplies, travel and year-end adjustments. Give each document a date and a matching ledger reference. A screenshot showing an account balance is weaker evidence than a transaction history showing how that balance arose. Preserve readable exports and backups even if you stop using the platform. Your records need to remain understandable without relying on access to an old account.

Does a later filing deadline let you pay later too?

Filing and payment deadlines are separate. CRA’s published calendar for the 2025 return gave self-employed individuals a 15 June 2026 filing deadline while the balance owing remained due on 30 April 2026. Use the calendar for the return you are filing, including weekend or holiday adjustments. Starting a side business is a reason to check both dates, not a reason to assume that the later filing date also postpones payment.

Before taking on work, read AirPost’s sender explanation and agree who owns the goods, pays the labels and supplies packaging. For screening the opportunity itself, use the general warning signs in packing-from-home scams. Once the agreement is clear, your tax task becomes much smaller: track the service you sold, the costs you incurred and the settlement of each fee.

Frequently asked questions

How do I report side hustle income in Canada without a T4?

A sole proprietor generally reports business income and expenses on T2125 with the personal return. Keep records even when no slip is issued; a missing T4 does not make service income exempt.

Is side income below C$30,000 tax-free?

No general income-reporting exemption follows from that amount. The GST/HST small-supplier test and the calculation of personal income tax are separate questions.

Do I report the value of stock a shop sends me?

Stock that remains the shop’s property is not your sale merely because you store and pack it. Record custody and ownership, and report your own service earnings.

Can I report only what I withdrew from AirPost?

Ordinary service-business accrual accounting follows earned income. Reconcile withdrawals to those earnings, including unpaid earned fees at year-end, rather than using withdrawals alone.

Do I need one T2125 for every shop?

CRA requires separate forms for separate businesses or professional activities. Several customers of the same packing business do not by themselves establish several separate businesses.
