In short

  • A 20 kg parcel can fit AirPost’s displayed large format, 60 × 50 × 40 cm and 10–30 kg, if its finished dimensions and booked service qualify. The Netherlands-to-Germany DPD Classic reference is €17.13, checked on 10 October 2026; heavy does not automatically mean oversized.
  • Weigh the closed box, including all protection, rather than using the weight of the products alone.
  • A carrier’s public maximum and a platform’s offered parcel format are separate limits; use the actual booking conditions.
  • Compare a suitable single-box service with separately measured split parcels before choosing the cheaper-looking weight band.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

A dense carton of books and a lightweight furniture component can create different shipping problems. The books may be heavy but compact. The furniture component may weigh less while exceeding the length a service accepts. If you only search for a 20 kg price, you can miss the reason one of those boxes needs a different booking. Start with the closed parcel and keep its weight, three dimensions and packaging shape as separate facts.

This guide deals with a heavy ordinary carton, not the existing five- and ten-kilo price comparison. It uses AirPost’s live Netherlands-to-Germany and Germany-to-Germany service pages, plus DHL’s official bulky-goods guidance, checked on 10 October 2026. The route pages describe offered formats and prices. They do not establish that every long object, pallet, suitcase or service advertised directly by a carrier is available through AirPost.

Which measurements decide whether your 20 kg box fits?

Record the packed weight and measure the outside of the finished carton. Include bulging sides, reinforced ends and anything projecting beyond the box. Compare the longest, middle and shortest sides with the selected format; rotating the carton can help identify the corresponding dimensions, but cannot reduce them. The large format on the checked route pages is 60 × 50 × 40 cm with a displayed weight band of 10–30 kg.

For a hypothetical 55 × 45 × 35 cm carton weighing 20 kg, those measurements fit within the displayed format. A 70 × 35 × 25 cm carton at the same weight exceeds its longest side. The second carton needs another supported arrangement, even though its weight is unchanged and its total volume is smaller. This is a format check; the carrier’s contents, packaging and service conditions still need to be met.

Does heavy mean Sperrgut in Germany?

No. Sperrgut means bulky or non-standard freight in the relevant carrier’s terminology. DHL’s private-customer guide identifies parcels exceeding its standard 120 × 60 × 60 cm dimensions, unsuitable shapes, protruding parts and certain non-cardboard packaging as bulky goods. A parcel can therefore require special handling because of shape or packaging without weighing 20 kg. Use the rules for the product actually being booked.

The DHL guide is useful for understanding the distinction, not for expanding AirPost’s 60 × 50 × 40 cm format. A box can fit DHL’s public standard dimensions and still be too long for the displayed AirPost option. Do not select the smaller platform format and assume the carrier’s broader retail limit will override it. If your carton falls outside the offered format, confirm a supported service before purchasing a label.

What are the live large-parcel references to Germany?

Dispatch routeDisplayed large-parcel serviceLabel reference
Netherlands → GermanyDPD Classic€17.13
Netherlands → GermanyPostNL Parcel EU€21.04
Germany → GermanyDPD Classic€12.32
Germany → GermanyDHL Paket€25.80
AirPost service pages retrieved 10 October 2026. Large format: 60 × 50 × 40 cm, displayed band 10–30 kg. Each price includes the €0.85 platform fee. Sender preparation is additional; confirm the actual booking.

The origins in this table are part of the price. You cannot apply the German domestic reference to goods still sitting in the Netherlands. Nor can you use it as a quote for dispatch from the UK or another country. Check the route heading before comparing services. Home delivery, collection, contents restrictions and any collection arrangement should match the order you intend to send.

The recommended large-parcel sender fee is €5.50; the sender chooses the agreed fee. Adding that recommendation to the German DPD label reference gives €17.82 for label and preparation. The displayed label already contains the platform fee, so do not add it again. Packaging and any separately agreed work need their own treatment in your budget.

Would two lighter parcels cost less than one heavy parcel?

Not necessarily. Compare the final packing plan, then calculate both quotes. If the split produces two qualifying medium-format cartons, each at or below 10 kg and within 45 × 35 × 30 cm, the references below show what happens to the label subtotal. They are a conditional comparison, not a claim that every 20 kg order can be repacked into two ten-kilo boxes. Extra packaging can change the total weight.

Same DPD routeOne qualifying large cartonTwo qualifying medium cartons
Netherlands → Germany€17.13€22.32
Germany → Germany€12.32€17.96
Calculated from the same checked AirPost route pages. Label subtotals include platform fees per parcel, but exclude preparation and packaging. Both split cartons must independently qualify.

With the recommended sender fees, preparation for two medium parcels is €6.00, compared with €5.50 for one large parcel. Use the actual agreed fees in your decision. Splitting also produces two tracking records and potentially separate arrival times. It may still be necessary for protection or acceptance, but a lower price on one lighter label is not proof of a lower order total.

How should you pack a dense twenty-kilo order?

Choose packaging suitable for the contents and the load, following the selected carrier’s guidance. Check the base and closure before lifting the finished carton. Keep dense items from moving around inside, and protect anything they could crush. A large empty space does not help a heavy item travel safely. Use the appropriate protection, then weigh and measure the result again; packing quality and format eligibility need to be checked together.

Record a repeatable packing recipe: carton reference, arrangement of products, protective material and finished measurements. Recheck it when the supplier changes the product packaging or a basket contains an extra item. For example, 19.4 kg of goods plus 1.1 kg of carton and protection becomes 20.5 kg. That is an illustrative calculation, not a measurement of your order. Use your own scales rather than rounding down to a desired bracket.

Can you leave a heavy parcel at any parcel shop or locker?

Check the supported handover method for the purchased label. A carrier brand on a nearby sign does not establish that the location accepts every service or parcel format. A locker also needs a compartment the carton can actually enter. Confirm the location and instructions before carrying a heavy box there. The rate page’s recipient home-delivery description is a separate issue from how the sender hands the parcel to the carrier.

Where an eligible service offers collection, review the arrangement and any applicable charge before booking. Do not assume collection is included merely because a service has a collection badge. For a home sender, practical handling matters too: they need to receive, store, pack and move the agreed carton. Ask about that capacity explicitly instead of assuming someone who handles small parcels can also manage your heavy products.

When does a long object need a different shipping method?

Pause the ordinary-parcel comparison when the safely packed item exceeds the offered format. A long component, irregular object or pallet may need a different parcel product, approved bulky-goods handling or a freight service. Obtain a quote using the real dimensions, contents and pickup arrangement. A standard large-parcel rate cannot price a pallet simply because both weigh the same amount. Keep any special handling instructions with the quotation.

If changing the packing would bring the item into a supported format without compromising protection, compare that option too. Do not bend, dismantle or compress a product unless that is appropriate for the goods and the customer’s expectations. Describe the final package accurately. The smaller Germany parcel price guide helps with ordinary lighter shipments; it does not supply a bulky-goods booking for an oversized item.

Could local German stock reduce the transport cost?

The table shows a lower German domestic DPD reference than the Netherlands-to-Germany one for the same displayed large format. That difference is useful information, but it is not the saving from a complete stock move. Include replenishment transport, preparation, packaging and the sender’s handling capacity. A single heavy one-off order can justify a different decision from repeat orders whose products are already held locally.

Through AirPost for online shops, you can agree for a suitable sender to hold a trial batch and pack customer orders from home. Confirm availability and capacity first. The German local-stock guide explains the broader arrangement. Give the sender the measured packing recipe and an instruction to pause any order that exceeds it. A domestic label only helps when the goods and handling plan are actually in place.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 20 kg parcel automatically oversized?

No. Weight, dimensions, shape and packaging are separate checks. A compact twenty-kilo carton may fit an offered service; a much lighter long object may not.

Can I use DHL’s public maximum for an AirPost booking?

Check the actual offered format and booking terms. A carrier’s retail maximum does not expand the platform option you selected.

Do the large-parcel references include packing?

They include the platform fee but exclude the sender’s agreed preparation fee. Include packaging and any additional agreed handling when budgeting the order.

Is splitting into two parcels always cheaper?

No. Compare both finished boxes, both labels and both preparation fees. In the conditional DPD examples here, two qualifying medium labels have a higher subtotal than one qualifying large label.

Does the German domestic price apply to a parcel dispatched abroad?

No. The parcel must depart from Germany for that route reference to apply. A local-stock plan also requires an actual sender, stock transfer and agreed handling.
