Shippo customs declaration: US labels or European dispatch?

Check Shippo customs fields, USPS duty limits and invoice printing. Compare the workflow with Sendcloud and preparing stock for European customers.

In short

  • A Shippo customs declaration needs item-level data, including 6 documented inputs: description, quantity, SKU if applicable, unit weight, unit value and country of origin. For a US shop promising duties paid, check the carrier first: Shippo says USPS international shipments use DDU and do not support DDP.
  • A purchased shipping label does not establish that customs duties or clearance charges are included in your checkout price.
  • The downloaded document set differs between USPS, UPS and DHL Express. Your packing instructions must match the selected carrier and paperless eligibility.
  • Compare Sendcloud for a confirmed supported dispatch setup, rather than assuming its international features make it a replacement for every US-origin service.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Your US store has an international order, and Shippo asks for customs information. The immediate task is to describe the goods accurately. The larger decision is whether your chosen service matches what you told the customer about duties and delivery. This guide compares the customs workflow you operate in Shippo with a confirmed Sendcloud setup and the separate option of preparing orders from stock already in Europe.

Which product details belong in the declaration rather than the parcel field?

Shippo’s international shipping instructions list description, quantity, optional SKU, weight per item, value per item and country of origin. Store or CSV orders with line items can prefill the items; manually created labels require you to add them. Review imported values before buying the label. An integration moving a field does not establish that your catalog contains the correct information.

Keep product data separate from the finished parcel. The contents describe what is sold; the package record describes the outer box that the carrier moves. A carton can hold different products with different origins and values. Grouping the whole order under your store name makes it harder to check the declaration against the order and invoice. Use descriptions that identify the goods without relying on an internal nickname.

Treat origin as a catalog question that must be resolved from your product records, rather than copying the warehouse location into every line. Preserve the supporting information with the SKU. If the supplier changes, review the affected item before the next export. The person packing an order should not have to infer manufacturing information from a shelf label or select a convenient country to complete a required field.

Can a USPS label deliver the duties-paid promise at checkout?

Shippo documents DDU, meaning bill recipient, as its default customs setting and says USPS does not support DDP. That is a carrier constraint within the documented workflow. If your store promises that the buyer will not pay import charges at delivery, do not treat a USPS international label as confirmation of that promise. Resolve the carrier and billing arrangement before offering the service.

Write the promise in plain customer language, then check it against the selected product. Decide who can be billed if delivery is refused and what your team will do when the customer reports an import bill. Do not quietly change the declaration after checkout to make the screen appear consistent. Either choose an eligible arrangement or correct the delivery offer before taking further orders under the same promise.

Use the terminology printed in the platform documentation when discussing the account with support. Then translate the outcome into a customer-facing explanation of what is included. A checkout phrase such as taxes included needs an actual charging process behind it. Neither a toggle nor a carrier logo provides evidence that every required charge has been collected or paid.

What changes in the document pouch when you switch carriers?

Shippo workflowDocumented handlingPacking instruction to verify
USPS internationalCustoms information is incorporated into the label; no separate commercial-invoice download buttonFollow the pages and copies supplied for that USPS shipment
UPS without paperless eligibilityDownloaded file combines label and commercial invoicePrint the complete set and place the required invoice copies outside the parcel
UPS with EDI on the labelShippo identifies EDI labels as eligible for Paperless TradeCheck the actual eligibility indicator before removing printed paperwork
DHL Express, FedEx or Canada PostCommercial invoice is downloaded separately from the labelRetrieve both documents; check whether electronic submission applies
Based on Shippo’s commercial-invoice instructions, checked 13 October 2026. Apply the requirements of the purchased service and any additional product documentation.

Shippo’s commercial invoice and Paperless Trade guide explains these differences. For UPS without electronic handling, it describes invoice copies in an outside pouch. For DHL Express, FedEx and Canada Post, the invoice is a separate download. This is a useful comparison test: can your team retrieve the right document set without guessing from the carrier name?

Place the instruction beside the packing station and connect it to the shipment record. Check whether the person who prints labels can also access the invoice download. If one employee buys labels and another finishes the cartons, make document completion an explicit handover step. A box that looks ready on the shelf can still be missing the paperwork needed for the selected service.

For a paperless shipment, retain the electronic document and the visible eligibility evidence with the order. For a printed shipment, confirm that the copies are legible and protected as directed. Do not reuse paperwork from a cancelled label. The package, active tracking number and declaration should remain identifiable as one shipment, including after an address correction or change of carrier.

Does the price shown by Shippo cover customs and brokerage?

Shippo’s invoice guide says customs charges are not included in its shipping rate. It also distinguishes brokerage from duties and taxes and says charges for a connected own carrier account are invoiced directly by that carrier. Keep the carrier label, customs charging arrangement and any clearance bill as separate records. This prevents a software quotation from becoming an unsupported landed-cost promise.

Ask for the invoice route before comparing tools. Which party collects each charge, in which currency, and under which reference? When the recipient is billed, your shop still needs a support response consistent with the sale. When the sender is billed, the label purchase may be only the first entry in the shipment budget. Record actual quoted charges without assigning an invented percentage for all destinations.

How should you compare the same order with Sendcloud?

The Sendcloud international shipping guide says DDP is available only with a direct carrier contract. It documents DAP as the default unless the shipping-method name specifies otherwise. That provides a practical shortlist condition: verify your contract, origin and selected method, rather than assuming every international label in another dashboard can be sender-paid.

For a US-origin store, obtain confirmation that the proposed account supports your origin and the actual carrier service. For a European stock location, check that location separately. These are different operating setups even if the ecommerce platform is the same. Build the trial around the dispatch address you will use, not the destination market appearing in a feature description.

Run the comparison with the same product records and final carton. Check imported line items, payer setting, generated document and returned tracking reference. Keep transport price separate from software access and any contract charges. For stores also comparing automation across channels, the existing multi-store shipping software guide covers rule behaviour; the test here concerns customs and document handover.

What would dispatch from stock already in France cost to prepare?

Moving stock to Europe changes the physical dispatch arrangement. It does not settle the earlier import, tax or product-compliance work needed to place that stock there. Compare those costs separately before treating a domestic label as an alternative to each US export. You also need to confirm that a local person can receive, hold and prepare your products under an agreed process.

As a European dispatch reference, AirPost’s carrier-only index retrieved on 13 October 2026 lists France → France up to 2 kg at €4.55. Add €0.85 platform fee and the recommended €3.00 preparation fee for the ordinary parcel category: €4.55 + €3.85 = €8.40. Category eligibility, the actual sender agreement and the selected label must still be checked.

This is a euro-denominated reference for European dispatch, not a US shipping quote or a dollar conversion. Packaging, initial stock movement, import costs and optional services are outside the subtotal. The recommended preparation fee is not a guaranteed sender price. Use the agreed quote for your real goods before comparing this arrangement with a US-origin carrier invoice.

Through AirPost for shops, discuss the stock batch, packaging and order handover with a sender. Confirm how instructions and approvals reach that person; a Shippo or Sendcloud connection does not prove an AirPost integration. If your decision is about stock location, the European fulfilment comparison addresses the wider operating choice.

Which evidence makes your next international order repeatable?

Keep a checked product record, chosen service, payer arrangement, active declaration and document-completion status together. When an exception occurs, update the specific instruction that failed. This gives your team a working process for the next order and lets you assess a software change against the same requirements. Choose the setup that makes those responsibilities clear and can execute your checkout promise.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shippo do international shipping?

Its help centre documents international orders and customs declarations. Availability still depends on the origin, carrier, service and goods in the actual shipment.

Does a Shippo customs form pay the import duties?

No. A declaration describes the goods. Your carrier service and payer arrangement determine how import charges are handled.

Why is there no commercial-invoice button for my USPS label?

Shippo says USPS customs information is incorporated into the label rather than provided through that separate button. Check the complete page set for your shipment.

Can I compare Shippo and Sendcloud for DDP?

Yes, after confirming origin and carrier eligibility. Sendcloud’s guide requires a direct contract for DDP; do not compare a desired setting with an unavailable service.

Does local European preparation remove the first stock import?

No. The earlier stock movement and its obligations remain separate. A domestic dispatch calculation starts with goods already available at the local preparation location.
