In short
- For 2026, a third-party settlement organization generally must issue Form 1099-K when your reportable gross payments exceed $20,000 AND your transactions exceed 200. Those are reporting thresholds; taxable packing income does not become tax-free below them.
- Direct payment-card transactions have no federal minimum reporting threshold, and a form can arrive below the third-party-network thresholds.
- A 1099-K reports gross payment activity. Reconcile it with fees, adjustments and your own records before calculating business profit.
- When you pack a shop’s products, distinguish your service earnings from the shop’s merchandise sales and the carrier’s label charges.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
You receive money for packing orders at home, then see an article saying the IRS threshold is $600, $2,500 or $20,000. The first question is which rule applies to the calendar year on your form. The second is whether that form describes your actual earnings. A headline about payment reporting cannot answer both. This guide covers US federal reporting for 2026, checked on October 14, 2026, for someone earning service fees as a sender.
AirPost’s earn-from-home page explains the work: a shop sends you stock, you pack orders and hand them to a carrier, and you set your rate. Your tax records should describe that service. They should not treat the entire value of every product passing through your home as money you earned.
Do both the dollar amount and transaction count have to cross the limit?
Yes, for the federal third-party settlement organization rule. The IRS’s current 1099-K FAQs explain that the 2025 law restored the earlier threshold. The condition uses “exceeds” for both limits. Exactly $20,000 does not exceed $20,000; exactly 200 transactions does not exceed 200. These boundaries concern the organization’s federal information-return obligation, not your income-tax return.
| Boundary test | Federal TPSO threshold crossed? | What the test tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Gross payments exactly $20,000; count above 200 | No | The dollar condition is not exceeded |
| Gross payments above $20,000; exactly 200 transactions | No | The transaction condition is not exceeded |
| Gross payments above $20,000; count above 200 | Yes | Both conditions are met |
| Either condition is below its boundary | No | A form can still be issued for another reason |
Count the payment transactions covered by the reporting arrangement, rather than substituting your parcel count or the number of deposits into your bank. A payout can combine several earnings entries. An order can also generate adjustments. Ask the issuer which payment records its figure includes when the count seems inconsistent. A spreadsheet of completed parcels is useful operational evidence, but it is not automatically the transaction count used on a tax form.
Why could you receive a 1099-K below $20,000?
The IRS’s explanation of Form 1099-K distinguishes third-party networks from direct payment-card processing. A card processor reports payments without a minimum dollar amount or transaction count. The IRS also says a third-party organization can issue a form below the federal threshold, and state reporting requirements can be lower. Receiving a smaller form is therefore not proof of an error.
Keep the federal and state questions separate. This article does not give a single state threshold because your state and the issuer’s reporting obligations matter. Inspect the state fields and the issuer’s explanation instead of assuming the federal limit prevents all reporting. Nor should you request cancellation merely because the amount is small. First determine whether the name, taxpayer identification number, calendar year and actual payment activity are correct.
For AirPost specifically, do not infer your US form type from a payment-provider logo or from the word “platform.” The published sender copy explains earnings and commission, but does not establish which US information return will be issued for your account. Your payer or reporting entity must explain the form and its payment scope. You can keep complete earnings records while that reporting detail is being confirmed.
Why is the form larger than the deposit in your bank?
The official 1099-K instructions define gross reportable payments before adjustments such as fees, refunds and shipping amounts. A deposit represents money transferred after applicable adjustments. Business profit is a third figure, reached after reporting income correctly and deducting allowable expenses. Do not make these three labels interchangeable simply because your bookkeeping software has one field called income.
Here is a calculation using AirPost’s payout commission of 3%, read from its constant on October 14, 2026. Normalize a USD-denominated earnings payout to $100, solely to show the arithmetic: the commission is $3.00, leaving $97.00 before your taxes and other expenses. This is a percentage example, not a quoted US packing fee, a promised payout or a prediction of the amount on a 1099-K.
| Record | Amount per $100 of earnings | How to reconcile it |
|---|---|---|
| Sender earnings before payout commission | $100.00 | Trace to the earnings statement |
| AirPost payout commission | $3.00 | Trace to the commission record |
| Amount after that commission | $97.00 | Match the relevant payout, allowing for other documented adjustments |
If your business records start with gross earnings and separately deduct the commission, do not also reduce gross earnings by that commission a second time. If you start from net deposits, reconstruct the gross figure and its expense bridge before matching a gross-reporting form. Attach each adjustment to a statement or invoice. A difference is explainable when its components are visible; a guessed expense inserted to force a match is not.
Whose product sales and shipping charges belong in your records?
A sender handling goods for a shop is providing a service. Under AirPost’s published model, the shop retains its stock and pays for shipping. Physical possession of the products does not make their selling price your packing revenue. Keep the shop’s stock list for custody and fulfillment, and your earnings statement for service compensation. Those documents answer different questions, even when they refer to the same order.
If a reporting form appears to include an online store’s customer receipts rather than your sender earnings, investigate the payee identity and account mapping. Likewise, ask why carrier charges appear if they were paid directly by the shop. Do not automatically label an unfamiliar amount a deductible expense: you may never have received it as your income or incurred it as your cost. The peer-to-peer fulfillment explanation helps distinguish these roles.
Create a reconciliation with separate columns for service earnings, documented reversals, payout commission, transfers and unresolved entries. Give each entry a date and a source reference. Leave the stock’s retail value outside that earnings calculation unless your actual arrangement separately involves selling goods you own. This separation helps you ask a precise correction question and prevents a logistics report from accidentally becoming an income report.
What should you do before entering the form in your tax return?
Identify the reporting account
Check the calendar year, issuer, payee name and taxpayer number. Establish which payment stream the form covers.
Build the gross-to-payout bridge
Match reportable payments to statements, then document fees, reversals and other differences individually.
Compare all information returns
Look for the same service payments appearing on another form. A second document does not necessarily mean a second stream of income.
Request a correction with evidence
Use the issuer contact on the form. Keep the original, your reconciliation and the correction request together.
Report the actual income
Use the correct tax category and records for payments that were taxable, including amounts for which no form arrived.
The IRS guidance on what to do with a 1099-K explains how to address incorrect forms. You contact the issuer, rather than asking the IRS to change the issuer’s document. Keep any corrected version beside the original so you can see what changed. If the issue remains unresolved at filing time, use the IRS instructions for the specific error and give your preparer the supporting records.
Do not postpone recordkeeping until a form arrives. Save earnings and commission statements as you go, particularly when you change an account or stop accepting orders. The question at year-end is whether your return reports your income correctly. Crossing an information-reporting boundary merely adds another document to reconcile; staying below it does not replace that work.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 1099-K threshold $600 or $20,000 in 2026?
For federal third-party-network reporting, the current rule is more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Direct payment-card reporting has no minimum, and lower forms can be issued.
Does exactly 200 transactions trigger a 1099-K?
Exactly 200 does not exceed the federal TPSO transaction boundary. Both that count and the dollar amount must exceed their limits for this rule.
Do I owe tax if I do not get a 1099-K?
Taxable service income must still be reported. Information-return thresholds determine reporting by the payment entity, rather than a tax-free allowance for your work.
Does a 1099-K show profit after platform fees?
It reports gross payment activity. Reconcile fees and other adjustments separately, then calculate profit under the rules for your activity.
Will AirPost send me a 1099-K?
The public copy does not confirm a US form type for your account. Ask the reporting entity which form, payment scope and calendar-year total apply.
