In short
- For payments made in 2026, the general federal Form 1099-NEC reporting threshold is $2,000 in covered nonemployee service payments from a business payer. The former $600 limit applies to payments made before 2026; neither amount is a tax-free allowance for your packing income.
- Certain payment-card and third-party-network transactions fall under 1099-K rules instead of 1099-NEC rules, even when no 1099-K is ultimately required.
- The normal January 31 deadline moves to February 1, 2027, for 2026 forms because January 31 falls on a Sunday.
- Match forms to actual payment streams and count each item of service income once.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A shop pays you for a service, while a platform may move the money and another company may appear on a year-end document. That creates three separate questions: who paid you, which reporting rules cover the transaction, and how much income you earned. You can answer the last question from your records even before the reporting entity confirms the first two. Start there rather than treating a missing envelope as permission to leave income out.
For AirPost senders, the published arrangement is packing and shipping orders for online shops at a rate you set. This article explains US federal nonemployee-payment reporting, checked October 14, 2026. It does not confirm that AirPost will issue a particular US form or identify the reporting entity for your account; those details require confirmation from the payer or platform.
Does the $2,000 rule apply to income earned in 2025 or 2026?
The payment year controls the threshold comparison. The IRS information-return guidance states $600 for payments made before 2026 and $2,000 for payments made in 2026. Forms covering 2025 payments and delivered during the 2026 filing season therefore do not use the same threshold as forms covering payments made throughout 2026.
For the general service-payment rule, compare the payer’s covered calendar-year payments with the threshold, rather than treating each packing task as an independent allowance. The IRS contractor FAQ describes payments totaling $2,000 or more after December 31, 2025. Monthly statements help you track the accumulation without waiting until a large transfer reaches your bank.
Keep a separate payer column when you work through more than one arrangement. An annual total for your entire side business is useful for your tax return, but it may not equal the amount any single business is required to report. Conversely, dividing work into separate invoices for the same payer does not create a fresh reporting threshold for each invoice. Reconcile at the level the payer actually reports.
Which payment route points toward NEC, K or a payroll form?
| Payment or work arrangement | Reporting question to ask | Record you still need |
|---|---|---|
| A business pays directly for your independent packing services | Does the payer have covered 1099-NEC payments of $2,000 or more? | Service invoices and the calendar-year payer total |
| Payment is a covered payment-card or third-party-network transaction | Does section 6050W place reporting with the settlement entity? | Transaction records and any settlement-entity form |
| You perform work as an employee | Should the employer report wages on Form W-2? | Payroll statements, rather than assumed contractor treatment |
| Different documents include the same payments | Which issuer needs to correct the overlapping report? | A transaction-by-transaction overlap list |
The 1099-NEC instructions exclude covered payment-card and certain third-party-network payments from NEC reporting. The 1099-K instructions add a detail that many short explanations miss: the K reporting threshold is disregarded when deciding whether a payment belongs under section 6050W rather than NEC reporting. No K form does not automatically send that payment back to the NEC rules.
Ask a concrete question if your arrangement is unclear: “Which entity reports these service payments, under which form, and are these transactions excluded from the payer’s NEC total?” Include the statement reference and year. That question is more useful than “Do platforms issue 1099s?” It allows the reporting entity to identify the account and transaction type without you inventing an answer from a payout screen.
Worker status is another separate issue. The IRS worker-classification guidance looks at the actual relationship, including control and financial arrangements. A form label does not override those facts. This guide’s service-income examples assume a genuine independent business; resolve a disputed employee relationship before choosing a tax treatment simply because a document says NEC.
Can you reconstruct earnings from a payout after commission?
Yes, provided the payout contains only the earnings and commission you are reconstructing. AirPost’s published commission constant was 3% on October 14, 2026. For a normalized $100 remaining after that percentage commission, divide by 0.97: gross earnings are approximately $103.09, and the commission is approximately $3.09. Use unrounded ledger values in your actual reconciliation.
This calculation is not an AirPost US rate quote or a promise about what a 1099-NEC reports. It shows why copying the bank deposit into a gross-earnings column can leave a mismatch. Other adjustments, conversion or transfers would require their own records. Once you have the actual gross statement, use it directly instead of reconstructing a figure unnecessarily from the deposit.
A clean ledger carries earnings, platform commission and the payout separately. The form then becomes a check against the relevant payment scope. If the payer reports gross compensation and your records already deduct commission, claim that commission only once if it qualifies as a business expense. If a form uses a different documented scope, reconcile that scope rather than forcing its total to equal an unrelated annual dashboard figure.
Do the same separation for the shop’s goods. Holding stock does not mean you bought the inventory or earned its retail selling price. Carrier labels paid directly by the shop are not automatically your expense. The existing fulfillment model explanation describes those roles; keep them visible when a bookkeeper asks why order totals exceed your service income.
When should the 2026 form arrive, and what if it does not?
The NEC instructions set January 31 as the usual deadline for filing with the IRS and furnishing recipient statements, with a move to the next business day for weekends or applicable holidays. January 31, 2027, is a Sunday, making the ordinary deadline February 1, 2027. Confirm any applicable relief separately. Save the payer’s electronic delivery instructions so you know whether to check an account, email notice or postal address.
If you expect a form and cannot find it, compare your covered payer total first. Then ask whether a form was issued, which address or account received it, and whether a corrected version exists. Keep this correspondence with the year’s statements. Do not file a payer’s information return yourself merely to create a document for your own income-tax preparation. Your earnings records are the foundation for reporting your income.
For an independent contractor operating a trade or business, the IRS generally directs nonemployee compensation to Schedule C. Lack of a form does not change that income into an untaxed category. Bring both covered and unreported payment streams to your preparer, while distinguishing personal transfers and other amounts that were not compensation. The aim is a complete income record, not the largest possible pile of forms.
What should you do with a W-9 request or two overlapping forms?
Form W-9 supplies a taxpayer identification number and certification to a requester that needs to report payments. The IRS W-9 page explains its purpose. Return it through the payer’s verified process and make the name and tax classification match your actual situation. A W-9 request itself is not proof that you are above the reporting threshold or that a particular form must follow.
The IRS backup-withholding guidance gives the federal backup rate as 24% for applicable payments when the rules require it, such as certain taxpayer-number problems. Actual federal withholding is different from a platform commission. If an NEC reports backup withholding, retain that amount for the tax-payment credit calculation; do not enter it as the same kind of operating fee.
When a K and NEC overlap, list the shared transaction references and ask the appropriate issuer for correction. Include distinct payments from either form, but avoid adding the overlapping portion twice. Keep the original forms and any corrected versions, alongside an explanation of the difference. If the correction is unresolved, give that evidence to your preparer so your return reports the actual income and follows the instructions for the reporting error.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 1099-NEC threshold $600 or $2,000 for 2026?
Covered service payments made in 2026 generally use $2,000. Payments made before 2026 use the former $600 threshold, even if their form arrives in 2026.
Do I report packing income below $2,000?
Yes, if it is taxable income. The payer’s information-return threshold does not create a tax-free earnings allowance for the recipient.
Can I receive both 1099-NEC and 1099-K?
Different payment streams can produce different forms. Match them to the underlying payments and request correction when the same transactions were incorrectly reported twice.
Does no 1099-K mean the shop must send 1099-NEC?
Not automatically. Covered payment-network transactions are excluded from NEC reporting regardless of whether the K reporting threshold is crossed.
When are 2026 1099-NEC forms due?
The ordinary recipient and IRS deadline is February 1, 2027, because January 31 falls on Sunday. Check separately for any applicable deadline relief.
