2026 estimated tax dates: US packing income started late?

Use the four federal 2026 estimated tax dates, test the $1,000 and safe-harbor rules, and choose W-4 withholding or annualization for late-year side income.

In short

  • The ordinary federal estimated-tax deadlines for 2026 are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. If you begin packing orders in October, evaluate your whole-year tax and the annualized-income method rather than assuming you owed four identical side-income installments.
  • Individuals generally need estimated payments when they expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and credits and their payments will not meet the applicable coverage test.
  • A W-2 employee can cover side-business tax through sufficient additional federal paycheck withholding instead of separate estimated payments.
  • A penalty safe harbor determines how much must be paid on time; it does not cap the final tax bill.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

You start accepting packing work near the end of the year and find a list of quarterly tax dates, most of which have already passed. That does not tell you whether you missed a required payment. Your answer depends on when the taxable income arose, what your day job withheld, and which payment method you use. A calendar is the beginning of the check, not the entire calculation.

This guide covers ordinary US federal individual deadlines, checked October 14, 2026. AirPost’s sender page describes the packing work. Use actual earnings and expenses from that work alongside your other household tax records. Separately check state requirements and any IRS relief that applies to your location; this calendar does not assume a special deadline extension.

Which income periods match the four 2026 payment dates?

Federal payment periodOrdinary 2026 tax-year due dateUseful sender records to close
January 1–March 31April 15, 2026Income and deductible costs through March 31
April 1–May 31June 15, 2026Updated year-to-date records through May 31
June 1–August 31September 15, 2026Updated year-to-date records through August 31
September 1–December 31January 15, 2027Full-year records through December 31
Federal estimated-tax periods are unequal. They are not the four ordinary three-month calendar quarters.

The IRS gig-work guidance gives these payment periods. The 2026 Form 1040-ES instructions confirm the dated schedule. Note the June deadline: the second period ends in May, not June. If you group every statement into conventional quarters, your totals will not directly match an annualized federal payment worksheet.

Make an additional subtotal at each federal cutoff while retaining your ordinary monthly statements. Keep the dates of income recognition and expenses available, with any payout adjustments documented. Do not move income between periods simply by relabeling a bank transfer. Your accounting method and when funds are available can matter. Ask your preparer about held or restricted balances instead of assuming the bank-deposit date resolves every entry.

Does every profitable packing side job need a separate quarterly payment?

No. The IRS estimated-tax page explains the general individual test: an expected balance of at least $1,000 after withholding and credits, together with insufficient payment coverage. Evaluate the federal return as a whole. A small packing account can be covered by paycheck withholding; a larger account can still require action if wage withholding leaves a shortfall.

Begin with projected business profit, then calculate the relevant self-employment tax and the income-tax effect within your complete return. Include wages, other taxable income and applicable credits. Compare that total with expected withholding and payments already made. The $1,000 figure refers to the expected tax balance after those items, not $1,000 of gross sender fees or $1,000 deposited in your bank.

Do not use a platform information-return threshold as your payment trigger. A payment provider’s reporting decision and your federal tax payment obligations answer different questions. If a 1099 never arrives, your own records still supply the income figure. Likewise, a commission labeled “withheld” in a platform account is not necessarily federal tax paid on your behalf. Identify what the deduction actually represents.

How do you find a payment target without guessing a reserve percentage?

The IRS underpayment tax topic describes the usual penalty protection through sufficient timely payments. The general comparison uses 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of the prior year’s tax, whichever is smaller. For the prior-year route, use a return covering a full twelve-month year and the tax figure required by the instructions, rather than the amount of last year’s refund.

For 2026, Form 1040-ES says the prior-year percentage rises to 110% if your 2025 adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, or $75,000 if married filing separately for 2026. That test uses prior-year AGI. It does not rise merely because one month’s packing fees increased. Apply the correct percentage before comparing the prior-year route with your current-year estimate.

  1. Estimate the whole-year liability

Combine projected income tax and other applicable federal taxes using the current worksheet. Start from business profit, not just deposits.

  2. Compare the permitted payment targets

Calculate the current-year percentage and the eligible prior-year percentage. Check that you meet the conditions for each route.

  3. Subtract expected withholding and existing payments

Keep genuine federal tax payments distinct from business fees. The remaining target tells you whether additional action is needed.

  4. Apply a method that pays on time

Use the regular installment schedule, qualifying annualization, sufficient withholding or an appropriate combination. Save the calculation and confirmations.

A safe harbor protects against a particular underpayment penalty when its timing and amount conditions are met. It does not turn this year’s tax into last year’s tax. If your business profit rises, you can meet a prior-year target and still owe an additional balance when you file. Keep a separate forecast of that final balance so the payment target does not become a false spending limit.

Could additional withholding from your W-2 job cover the shortfall?

The IRS explicitly identifies additional wage withholding as an option for employees doing gig work on the side. Use the Tax Withholding Estimator with current pay statements and other requested records, then submit an appropriate new Form W-4 to your employer. Confirm the change on a later paycheck; calculating an adjustment does not make payroll implement it.

Count the paychecks remaining after the change can take effect. A yearly shortfall spread across a full year will not be collected if only the final few paychecks remain. Give the payroll process time and check the cumulative amount withheld. If the desired adjustment cannot fit the remaining pay, you may need estimated payments as well. Record both routes in the same federal tax-payment ledger.

The Form 2210 instructions explain that withholding is generally treated as paid evenly across the installment dates unless actual-date treatment is elected under the rules. This can make late-year additional withholding different from a late estimated payment. Do not assume any payment made in December automatically cures an earlier installment problem; the payment type and the applicable calculation matter.

What changes when your first packing income arrives in October?

The annualized-income installment method accounts for uneven income using the cumulative totals through the prescribed periods. IRS Publication 505 explains this method and its 2026 worksheet. If the packing business starts in October, your earlier periods may contain no profit from that activity, while wages or other income still appear. Keep those earlier totals; do not simply erase the earlier columns.

Annualization can reduce required earlier installments compared with a regular annual allocation when your income actually arose later. It is not an automatic permission to postpone tax because you prefer to pay at year-end. The worksheet and, when required, Form 2210 with Schedule AI document the method. Save the evidence of the business start, earnings dates and expenses so the periods can be reconstructed.

If you had earlier untaxed income from another activity, starting packing in October does not remove that earlier obligation. Review the complete year before deciding that only the January 15 installment matters. If a payment was missed, calculate the issue and act on the balance; do not spread a late payment backward in your ledger. A dated payment confirmation is useful precisely because it preserves when the payment happened.

Which part of an AirPost payout should fund your tax reserve?

AirPost’s commission constant was 3% when checked on October 14, 2026. On a normalized $100 of USD sender earnings, that commission is $3.00, leaving $97.00 before other business costs and your taxes. The commission is an operating charge, not a federal estimated-tax remittance. This arithmetic uses no assumed parcel volume and quotes no US packing fee.

Use that distinction in your ledger: earnings first, commission second, allowable other expenses third, then a separately calculated tax reserve and actual tax payments. A reserve is cash you keep available; the IRS has not received it until you make a payment or payroll withholding remits tax. Review the reserve against your latest annual estimate rather than assuming the amount after commission is entirely available to spend.

Keep the stock and order reports alongside the income records without mixing them. The fulfillment model explanation distinguishes the shop’s products from your service. Your preparer needs sender earnings and costs for the tax estimate, rather than the retail value of every order you handled. Close each payment period with that separation intact and the next decision becomes much easier.

Frequently asked questions

What are the estimated taxes due dates for 2026?

The ordinary federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Check any applicable relief separately.

Are estimated taxes based on three-month quarters?

The federal payment periods are unequal: January–March, April–May, June–August and September–December. Retain totals at those cutoffs.

Can my W-2 withholding pay the taxes on a side hustle?

Yes, sufficient additional federal withholding can cover the liability. Recalculate with your complete return information and confirm the employer applied the W-4 change.

Do I owe earlier installments if I start my side business in October?

Not solely because the business later earns money. The annualized method can account for late income, but earlier wages and other income still need to be evaluated.

Does paying last year’s tax mean I will owe nothing when filing?

No. An eligible prior-year safe harbor can address the underpayment penalty while a higher current-year liability leaves a final balance due.
