In short
- For shipping to Madeira or the Azores, confirm the exact island, postcode and service before applying a Portugal price. CTT’s published business delivery table warns that some Madeira routes may be limited to 20 kg and some Azores routes to 5 kg; these are product-specific checks, not universal island limits.
- CTT’s island express guidance uses volumetric weight when it exceeds actual weight, so a light but bulky carton can enter a higher price band.
- Madeira and the Azores are within the EU customs and VAT territories; do not copy the Canary Islands’ tax treatment.
- AirPost’s country-level Portugal references do not confirm an island price, delivery promise or sender availability.
- AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.
A customer in Funchal and a customer on an Azorean island can both choose Portugal at checkout. That selection does not tell your shop which connection, weight limit or delivery product it needs. The question is not simply whether the destination country is supported. You need to know whether the actual service accepts this finished box for this island and postcode, then communicate the delivery expectation it supports.
This guide covers the island shipping check for an online shop. It uses CTT’s published island express information and business delivery table, the European Commission’s territorial list, and AirPost’s Portugal-to-Portugal rate page, checked on 10 October 2026. The AirPost figures below are country-level references. No island-specific AirPost quote was established from that page, so they must not be presented to a buyer as confirmed postage to Madeira or the Azores.
Why is Portugal alone not enough for a shipping quote?
Identify the island and full delivery locality before requesting transport. CTT’s published delivery table distinguishes Funchal, other Madeira localities, Porto Santo and individual Azorean islands. That is a useful warning against treating every island destination as one interchangeable route. Keep the actual postcode and island name in the quote request instead of shortening the address to Portugal or a convenient mainland city.
The dispatch point matters too. Mainland-to-island, same-island and inter-island movements are different transport arrangements. A sender in Lisbon does not make an order to an island a mainland delivery. Likewise, a sender on one island does not establish a same-island route to another. Record the real origin and destination together. This prevents a valid national service heading from being mistaken for proof of the required island coverage.
Is a 10 kg parcel accepted on every island service?
Do not infer acceptance from a generic maximum. The CTT business table for Envios para Amanhã says that services involving Madeira may be limited to 20 kg and those involving the Azores to 5 kg. The wording is conditional and belongs to that product’s coverage. Ask which limit applies to the actual booking, and check any contents and size restrictions as well. Another product may have different conditions.
Consider a hypothetical finished carton weighing 8 kg. It fits a ten-kilo band by weight, but that does not make it eligible for a route restricted to five kilos. If an alternative supported product exists, quote it using the same real measurements. If splitting is possible, measure each resulting parcel and obtain separate prices. A smaller box only solves the problem when it safely contains the goods and meets the booked service’s conditions.
Why can a lightweight box become expensive?
CTT’s Expresso em Dois Dias guidance says it calculates volumetric weight for express shipments between mainland Portugal and the islands, and between different islands. Where that result exceeds actual weight, it applies the price using volumetric weight. You therefore need the packed dimensions as well as the scale reading. Use the calculation required by the chosen service rather than importing a divisor from another courier.
This matters for items such as textiles or products protected inside a deep carton. The contents may be light while the box occupies substantial transport space. Compare a safely packed smaller carton if one is suitable, then request the quote again with its measurements. Do not remove protection merely to chase a weight band. Keep the final packing recipe beside the order so the sender reproduces the box that was actually quoted.
What do AirPost’s Portugal references tell you?
| Portugal → Portugal reference | Displayed format | Checked label price |
|---|---|---|
| CTT 48 home delivery | 35 × 25 × 15 cm; up to 5 kg | €5.02 |
| CTT 48 home delivery | 45 × 35 × 30 cm; up to 10 kg | €5.50 |
| DPD flexi door_to_door | 35 × 25 × 15 cm; up to 5 kg | €6.12 |
For a qualifying booking, preparation is separate from the label. AirPost’s recommended small-parcel sender fee is €2.25; the sender sets the fee you agree. Adding that recommendation to the checked small CTT reference gives €7.27 for label and preparation in that reference calculation. It does not establish the cost of an island order. Replace the label reference with a confirmed island quote before budgeting one.
The service name 48 on the rate card is not proof of a two-day island delivery. Similarly, the ten-kilo format displayed there does not cancel a specific island product’s lower limit. Use the page to understand the available national references, then ask for the actual destination check. For the general price question, the existing Portugal parcel cost guide covers the broader comparison.
How should you set a delivery expectation for an island?
Obtain the expected transit for the specific origin, destination, weight and service. CTT’s business table describes its delivery periods as indicative, counted from the working day after dispatch and excluding the stated holidays. It also warns that irregular island connections can affect them. Avoid turning a generic national delivery label into an unconditional arrival date. Packing time and the actual handover date come before the carrier’s transit period.
Tell the buyer when you expect to prepare the order and which carrier estimate you are using. If a quotation depends on a sailing or other connection, have the operator confirm the relevant arrangement before publishing a date. Keep the quote reference with the order. When tracking stops changing for a period, follow the operator’s process for that shipment instead of interpreting a quiet interval as proof that the parcel has been lost.
Are Madeira and the Azores outside the EU VAT territory?
No. The European Commission lists both Madeira and the Azores as territories where EU customs, VAT and excise rules apply. The Canary Islands have a different VAT territorial status. Do not reuse a Canary shipping explanation merely because all these destinations are islands. Transport coverage and tax territory are separate checks; a service can have an island-specific condition without that changing the territory’s legal classification.
That classification does not determine every tax amount on your order. Origin, goods and transaction details still matter, and regional tax rates should be checked in the applicable official guidance. This article does not quote a regional VAT rate or calculate an import bill. For goods leaving Great Britain, use the existing UK-to-Portugal customs guide for the recipient and document handoff, alongside the island service check described here.
What should a complete island quote request include?
- The actual dispatch address and full destination, including the island and postcode.
- Finished packed weight and all three outside dimensions.
- A clear description of the contents and any handling requirements.
- The required home or supported collection delivery arrangement.
- The intended handover method and preparation date.
- Questions about the applicable weight limit, volumetric calculation, expected transit and return arrangement.
Compare offers using the same parcel details. A quote for a compact five-kilo carton is not comparable with one for a bulky carton whose chargeable weight is higher. Check whether a stated subtotal includes the relevant charges before turning it into a checkout price. Keep written confirmation of coverage. If the operator cannot support the destination or contents, pause the order or offer a suitable alternative before purchasing an unsuitable label.
Could an island sender pack orders from local stock?
Through AirPost for online shops, shops arrange for senders near their customers to hold stock, pack orders and hand parcels to carriers. For an island plan, first establish that a suitable sender is available in the location you need and can use the required service. Country availability does not establish a sender on each island. Agree the stock transfer, packaging, capacity and return tasks before sending a trial batch.
Local stock may change the dispatch route, but the replenishment box still needs its own transport arrangement. Count that movement separately from customer labels. A same-island plan also should not be advertised as coverage for every other island without checking those routes. The Portugal local-stock guide explains the wider workflow. Use a small trial to test the agreed preparation and handover process before relying on it for repeat orders.
Frequently asked questions
Can I quote mainland postage for a Madeira customer?
Only use a price after the booked service confirms the actual destination. A country-level Portugal reference does not establish an island quotation or delivery timetable.
Are all Azores parcels limited to 5 kg?
No universal limit is established here. CTT’s cited business product warns that some Azores services may be limited to five kilos. Confirm the conditions of the specific service you intend to book.
Can volumetric weight apply between Portuguese islands?
Yes. The cited CTT express guidance covers movements between different islands as well as mainland-to-island movements. It uses volumetric weight when that exceeds actual weight for that product.
Do Madeira parcels follow Canary Islands VAT rules?
No. The European Commission lists Madeira and the Azores within the EU VAT and customs territories. Do not infer the tax treatment from the fact that a destination is an island.
Does AirPost guarantee a sender on my chosen island?
This article does not establish island-level availability. Check the actual sender location, capacity and supported handover service before sending stock or promising local fulfilment.
