In short

  • Yes: a verified person in Portugal can hold a batch of your stock and post each order as a Portuguese domestic parcel. On 26 September 2026 a 2 kg parcel cost €3.83 inside Portugal, €13.55 from the Netherlands and €9.25 from Germany.
  • Add about €3.10 per small parcel for packing and the platform fee, and a 2 kg order from Portuguese stock comes to about €6.93 — cheaper per order than cross-border from both the Netherlands and Germany.
  • Portugal is the far south-west corner of the EU: the cross-border leg is long, and a domestic parcel skips it. CTT and DPD carry domestic parcels on our rate card, with home delivery the cheapest option.
  • Portugal uses the euro. UK shops face customs on every cross-border parcel; EU shops pass the €10,000 OSS threshold across all EU countries combined, and stock in Portugal usually needs a Portuguese VAT number.
  • AirPost is a peer-to-peer fulfilment network: online shops have their orders packed and dropped at a parcel point by verified people near their customers, who earn a fee per parcel from home. No warehouse, no minimum order volume.

Seen from Amsterdam, Hamburg or Manchester, Portugal is the far south-west corner of the EU. That distance shows up twice: in the price of every cross-border label and in the days a Portuguese customer waits.

This article gives the measured numbers first, then what they mean for a Dutch, German or British shop, and ends with the steps to test Portuguese stock with one box. At a handful of Portuguese orders a month, keep shipping cross-border.

Cross-border or from Portuguese stock: the sum per order

Domestic from Portuguese stock costs the Portuguese label plus the sender’s fee and the platform fee — about €3.10 together for a small parcel. For a 2 kg order that is about €6.93, before the one bulk shipment that brings the stock to Portugal.

For a Dutch shop the gap per order is large, because the Portuguese domestic rate is low and the cross-border rate is high. The heavier the parcel, the wider the gap: the domestic price hardly rises between 2 and 10 kg. The bulk shipment into stock is the cost on the other side; spread over a month of orders it is usually small per parcel.

Domestic stock only works where a domestic service exists at a price a shop will pay. Portugal is one of those countries; the full list is read from the live rate card:

Pickup point or home delivery in Portugal?

On the AirPost rate card the Portuguese picture is the reverse of Denmark or France. CTT’s domestic service delivers to the door, and DPD’s home delivery is slightly cheaper than its collection from a parcel shop. So home delivery is the sensible default for Portugal, with the DPD Pickup point as the choice for customers who are not home during the day.

Whatever you choose, it is a domestic choice: the customer sees a CTT or DPD Portugal parcel, as from any Portuguese shop. The trade-off between point, locker and door across Europe is in pickup point vs home delivery in Europe.

Which carriers ship domestically in Portugal?

  • CTT — the Portuguese postal operator; its domestic service on our card delivers to the door.
  • DPD — Shop to Home to the door, or Collection to Parcel Shop at a DPD Pickup point.

These are the Portuguese domestic services on AirPost’s shipping options today. Which ones your sender can use depends on the carriers they have ticked in their profile, so check that before you send stock.

How long does delivery take?

On 26 September 2026 the shipping options page listed DPD at "tomorrow" inside Portugal and CTT at "within 2 working days". Those are the carriers’ own indications, not a promise. A cross-border parcel from the Netherlands, Germany or the UK adds the long leg to Iberia and a hand-over between networks, which is where the days go.

Returns from Portuguese customers

EU consumers can withdraw from an online purchase, so returns belong in the sum. Cross-border, a Portuguese return travels the same long way back at an international rate, which for cheap items often means refund and write-off. From Portuguese stock, the return can go to your sender with a domestic label: senders on AirPost can switch on returns and set a price per return, and their profile shows a Returns badge.

When a return arrives, the sender reports it with photos in your shared chat. The parcel stays with them until you accept it and say what should happen — back into stock, or something else. A returns page in Portuguese helps too: fewer customers will read an English one.

Euros, one thing less to arrange

Portugal uses the euro, so for a shop in the eurozone there is no currency to set up: the price at checkout, the label and what you pay AirPost are all in euros. A British shop sets a euro price for Portugal as for any other eurozone market.

Customs and VAT

Shops in the UK

From the UK every parcel to Portugal is an import. The customer or you pay Portuguese VAT, the carrier charges a handling fee, and since July 2026 there is a €3 customs duty per product type in the parcel — explained in the €3 EU customs duty. IOSS lets you collect the VAT at checkout on consignments up to €150, but GOV.UK notes that a business in Great Britain must appoint an intermediary to use it. One bulk shipment into Portuguese stock replaces all of that per-parcel work with one import.

Shops in the EU

Cross-border sales to consumers in other EU countries can stay taxed in your own country until they pass €10,000 a year across all EU countries together. Above that you charge Portuguese VAT on Portuguese orders, usually reported through the One Stop Shop (OSS).

Stock in Portugal is a different case

Once your goods sit in Portugal, selling from that stock is a Portuguese domestic sale. That usually needs a Portuguese VAT registration with the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, and OSS does not cover it. Arrange it with your accountant before the batch moves. How this works with AirPost

  1. Find a sender in Portugal

On /en/senders you see each sender’s carriers, measured shipping speed and reviews from other shops. Send a request; stock, orders and tracking then run through one conversation.

  2. Send one box

Products and packaging, about a month of Portuguese orders of one product. The stock stays yours: ask for it back and it is returned within 14 days.

  3. Connect your shop

Connect Shopify and pick Portugal, your carrier and home or pickup delivery. Paid Portuguese orders then go to your sender without you touching them.

  4. Or offer an order to several senders

Send one order to all your Portuguese senders at once; whoever picks it up first ships it. The customer’s address appears only to the sender who picks it up.

  5. The sender packs and drops it off

They buy the domestic label, hand the parcel to CTT or DPD, and the tracking number lands on the order in your shop.

  6. Lost or damaged in transit

We file the claim with the carrier and pass the awarded amount on to you in full.

You pay per shipment: the label, the sender’s fee and a platform fee of €0.85. No storage fee, no subscription, no minimum. The full picture for shops is on local fulfilment in Europe.

When it is not worth it

  • A few Portuguese orders a month: the bulk shipment and VAT registration cost more than they save.
  • A wide catalogue with a few sales per product: stock spread thin sits still.
  • Products that need your own quality check on every unit before they leave.
  • Tens of Portuguese orders a month of a few products.
  • Heavier parcels, where the cross-border price climbs and the domestic one does not.

Selling across Iberia? How to ship to Spain without a Spanish warehouse covers the neighbour, and how to ship domestically in Europe without a warehouse runs the same sum for every country.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship domestic parcels in Portugal without a Portuguese warehouse?

Yes. A verified individual in Portugal holds a batch of your stock at home and posts each order as a Portuguese domestic parcel. There is no building, so no storage fee and no minimum volume.

What does a 2 kg parcel inside Portugal cost?

On 26 September 2026 the cheapest measured service cost €3.83, carrier price only. From the Netherlands the same parcel cost €13.55 and from Germany €9.25.

Which carriers can a sender in Portugal use?

On AirPost today: CTT, with home delivery, and DPD, with home delivery or a DPD Pickup point. Your sender’s profile shows which ones they use.

Do I need a Portuguese VAT number?

Not for cross-border sales below the €10,000 EU-wide threshold. Once you hold stock in Portugal, sales from it are Portuguese domestic sales and usually need a Portuguese VAT registration; OSS does not cover them.

How much stock should I send to Portugal first?

About a month of Portuguese orders of one product. Enough to compare cost, transit and returns; small enough to write off if it does not work.
